91Classical spotlights five emerging composers at the Nashville Symphony Composer Lab, including SiHyun Uhm's 'Ladybug in the Room.'
91Classical's Colleen Wheelahan interviewed the five emerging composers selected for the Nashville Symphony Composer Lab, where their works were performed by a professional orchestra.
SiHyun Uhm, then a student at the Eastman School of Music, presented Ladybug in the Room — based on a cold evening in her dorm room, portraying her futile attempts at containing a stray ladybug to keep it warm, with running musical lines and a slamming moment of capture at the end.
She described her music as "very energetic and rhythmic," noting a particular fondness for "cool harmonies."

Ladybug in the Room workshopped at the Nashville Symphony Composer Lab with Giancarlo Guerrero, Aaron Jay Kernis, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Kip Winger.
"Inhabiting Neural Activity: A Closed-Loop VR System for Generative Sonification and Visualization of Spike Data" selected for a 30-minute presentation slot.
Ensemble Modern and Ensemble TIMF premiered Newton's Cradle at Tongyeong Concert Hall on September 12, 2026, conducted by Michael Wendeberg.

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra named SiHyun Uhm a Teaching Artist for its 2026/27 season Learning programs.
